Fresh Start

School starts tomorrow. My kitchen smells like new pencils, fresh notebook paper, and Elmer's glue. We packed up the kids' backpacks with Target school supplies this morning, checking each item off the official list. The new lunch boxes and thermoses are in the cupboard and the first day outfits are laid out on the window seat. Last year's papers have been cleaned out of the "homework hub" in my kitchen and both kids got new haircuts. Caleb's even gonna let me spike his hair tomorrow (he usually runs in terror from gel).

There's something so magical about the beginning of the school year. A chance to start over, begin again. The slate wiped clean. The start of an adventure pregnant with possibility. My kids can't wait to jump in and ride the wave. Neither can I.

Isaiah 43:19, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

  1. I feel the same way.

A new beginning. The slate wiped clean.

I can't wait for my new 6 year-old cuties to come pouncing through the door!

I WILL be getting a latte' on the way to school!

  2. Ahh yes, exciting for them...and a little more exciting for me!

I am tickled with anticipation - I love that latte idea :) Oooo!

  3. Two things: First, I am glad to see that your family has caught the "back to school" bug because for some reason, even though I am going into my 18th year of schooling (wow, craziness), I still get the back to school excitement. I feel like I should be getting new folders and picking out the coolest thermus, but all I get to do is cook dinner with my husband and read critical theory books (oh wait, that is actually really fun!)

And second, when you wrote "the start of a new adventure pregnant with possibility"....I read, a new pregnancy full of adventure, and I was like, WHAH! Jodie is pregnant!

Anyways, I love your blog and the comical glimpse you give us into your life.

  4. After our unfortunate starts at schooling (posted on my blog), I am so excited that this year, we had a good start. It's into the third week now, and the "good" is being sustained. YAY!

  7. We sat down with our goodies from Target too yesterday and double checked them off the list :) Apparently I bought the "cheap" pencils that didnt come pre-sharpened...gave the fun project to hubbie to manually sharpen all 24 :)
    One day down...
