Costume Shopping

Has anyone else noticed how inappropriately sexy Halloween costumes for little girls can be? Last night, Alex and I went to the party store and viewed dozens of costumes. She's over the whole Disney princess thing so, what was left shocked me. There was a sexy cat, a sexy pirate, a sexy bunny rabbit, sexy dark fairy, a sexy army cadet. ALL FOR SIZES 8-10. Eight year olds should not have to look sexy.

Seriously, people.

  1. yes ... same with women's costumes.

I often joke that halloween seems to be the day that (some) women think they can dress like sluts ... because that's what all the costumes look like.

    pretty sad.

  2. Don't buy them then. Make them. Be creative.

And if you want to be devilish or slutty or guesome, go ahead. Hallowe'en comes but once a year.

  3. Katelyn wants to be Violet from The Incredibles this year so I've been looking online...I'm appalled by some of the costumes for girls up to teens.

I totally wanted to make my girls' costumes this year but they didn't want to be a scarecrow, black cat OR a fairy/princess/ballerina thingy.

One of my corny fantasies is for all of us to be characters from the Wizard of Oz. I haven't been able to coax a single family member to join me so far.

  4. Hm. I'm pretty sure that I was a tube of toothpaste (crest) for Halloween when I was eight. It was a costume my aunt made for my cousin that was handed down and well, I'm not going to lie, it was fantastic.

  5. Yes...I noticed that last year while looking for a costume for myself! I was so angry that EVERY girl costume had to be "sexy". Even the cave woman. I mean....what?!

  6. I'm going as a rotund housewife this year. I feel bad for falling into the "sexy" trap but I just can't help it!

  7. I think you should dress her as Sarah Palin. A strong woman who never uses her sexuality . . . oh, um. Nevermind.

  8. I have a cute clown costume I made for Sarah when she was about 8! What a sad world we live in. I agree with ginny--don't buy them--be creative!! The toothpaste sounds great!

  9. In our house, one of the most creative costumes was dressing up like a piece of pumpkin pie....A white towel on the head worked well for whipped creme....the pie part....a cut up trash can painted orange wrapped around her waist. Definitely different.

  10. I think our best costume ever was when my older son was 11 and going trick or treating on his own with friends for the first time. They all dressed as girls (the scariest things they could imagine!). He dressed up in bell bottom jeans, white sandals and a purple velour top with a beaded butterfly. With a platinum bobbed wig on his head and some mascara and lipstick he was one of the prettiest girls I'd seen!

Aside from the wig, it all came from the second hand store... which goes back to Jodie's post on socially (not to mention environmentally and economically) conscious shopping.

  11. ...or devils. I HATE the pink devils and all devils in general. Why would any parent allow their child to fress up as the devil?

  12. I think I know what you mean Linda. I feel the same way about those Sarah Palin costumes, especially the ones with the pink jackets!

  13. I hear you, Jodie, with two tweenage girls and two teenage girls, I feel your pain. There was a day when I thought it was safe to say, let's just avoid the really scary costumes on Halloween. Today, sexy=scary to me. I just bought a book for my 14 year old called, "Sexy Girls: How Hot is Too Hot?" by Hayley DiMarco. I'm sure I'll blog about it when we are done reading it.
